Former world champion in 400-meter hurdles Nicolas Bett has died of a tragic accident in the western province of Nandi after his car collided with several bumps before turning over into a hole, media reports said.
Rachid Ishida, Kenyan Minister of Heritage and Sports, on Wednesday posted his condolences and grief after the death of Nicolas, who was crowned gold medalist in the 400m world championships at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, giving Kenya the first gold medal in a shorter distance than 800 meters away.
“Former world champion Nicolas Bett has died in a traffic accident … On behalf of his brothers in the sports world and the Kenyan Ministry of Heritage and Sports, I extend my deepest condolences to his family,” the sports minister said on Twitter.
The Ministry of Sports later released the message sent by the minister while the Kenyan Athletics Association confirmed the news of the death, as Bett was 28 years old on his return home after taking part in the African Championship in Nigeria Tuesday
