Djokovic continued his steady return to the field with a 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Frenchman Richard Gasquet (26).

“This was definitely the best game of the week, and one of my best matches in the solid season after Wimbledon,” said the Serbian, who has crowned Flushing Meadows in 2011 and 2015, which was crowned in July.

Djokovic saved five chances for Gasquet to break the match and will meet Joao Sousa of France, who beat Lukas Boye 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5).

“It was a big game from start to finish … in the third set, Richard raised his level,” he said, predicting a tough match against Souza. “The fighter will not give you a win. You have to win him.”

Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber beat his compatriot Alexander Zverev in the third round 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 6-1, and 6-3

The match was a confrontation between two generations: the 34-year-old Kohlschreiber and the 21-year-old youngster, Zverev, who is considered a rising talent in tennis. Although he is crowned with three titles in the Masters, he is still struggling to prove himself in the Grand Prix, having only reached the quarter-finals (in French Roland Garros 2018) and the fourth round once (Wimbledon 2017).

Kohlschreiber, who beat Diego Schwartzman of Argentina, 6-4, 6-4, 5-7, 6-1, is in the fourth round of the tournament.

Belgium’s David Goffin of Russia beat German Jan-Lennard Stroff 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

The game lasted four hours and ended at 2:22 am local time (06:22 GMT), the second in the history of the championship in terms of completion at this late time (compared to 2:26 am).

“Alex showed an amazing fighting spirit.” The 19-year-old Australian saved five chances for Cilic to win the game in the eighth game of Group E, an extra chance in the ninth and another in the last 12, before the 29-year-old Croatian the win.
