Karen Khachanov made one of his biggest surprises this year by beating Novak Djokovic 7-5 6-4 in the final of the Paris Masters tennis tournament to put an end to the Serbian domination of the men’s competition.
The 22-year-old Russian was seen at one point as a rising talent in tennis but few could have expected to beat the Serbian star, who had 22 consecutive wins in three months.
Djokovic was expected to celebrate his return to the top of the world rankings on Monday by winning the fifth title in Paris but lost in one hour and 37 minutes after 31 successful blow from his rival from Moscow.
Khachanov takes advantage of the effects of illness, which appeared on Djokovic, who has suffered a week of flu-like symptoms. But even though the Serbian seemed to be suffering from the fatigue of his three-hour marathon match against Roger Federer in the semi-final on Saturday, this does not diminish the beauty of Khachanov’s offensive performance.
In his fourth consecutive win over one of the top ten seeders this week, Khachanov, whose muscle-based performance recovers memories of his compatriot Marat Safin, the last Russian champion of the Paris tournament, the biggest title of his career so far.
I'd like to express my thanks to Paris and #nolefam for this part of an unforgettable journey. An honor to play in @RolexPMasters finals once more. Congrats to @karenkhachanov, big matches to come from him.
