Marquez Wins Thailand Grand Prix of MotoGP

Spain’s Marc Marquez on Sunday won the first edition of the Grand Prix of Thailand, the fifteenth stage of the MotoGP World Championship, to widen the lead to 77 points with a fifth-place finish.

Marquez beat Andrea Dovizioso in the last few minutes after a thrilling race between them on the last lap, which saw a switch between the Spanish Honda rider, and Italian rider Ducati.

Marquez cut the finish line 39: 55,722 minutes, just 0.115 seconds behind Marquez, while Spanish Maverick Vinales (Yamaha) finished third.

The 25-year-old world champion lost in the lead to Dufetsuoso and the late Valentino Rossi Yamaha, before Marquez could gradually return to the 26-lap race. The competition with Dovizioso ended at the last turn of the Buriram circuit.

In the overall standings, Marquez has 217 points, 77 behind Dovizioso, four before the end of the season. The winner of each race has 25 points.

Thailand hosted for the first time a stage of the MotoGP World Championship on the circuit of the northeastern town of Buriram, about five hours from Bangkok.
