Sloane Stephens The Third and Wozniacki Leaves The US Open

Sloane Stephens

Sloane Stephens stunned Andrea Petkovic 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the second round of the Washington Open, where he prepares to defend her US Open title.

Stephens seeded third with Danish Caroline Wozniacki, pulled out Tuesday with a leg injury.

Stephens began her career by winning two straight sets against her compatriot Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the first game and appeared in the first set against Petkovic as if preparing for another easy game.

But Sloane ranked third in the world rankings, faced more resistance in the second set, which the German won.

Petkovic, ranked 91st in the world rankings, managed to capture the third set after breaking her opponent twice.

Petkovic will face sixth seed Belinda Picnic of Switzerland and Japan’s Nao hibino.
