The Legend of Formula One Lauda Undergoes a Successful Lung Transplant

formula one racer Niki Lauda

Former world champion Formula One Niki Lauda underwent a successful pulmonary transplant after he was infected, the Vienna General Hospital said on Friday.

“the operation has been successfully completed,” the hospital said in a brief statement.

The 69-year-old world champion and businessman was forced to leave his vacation in Ibiza, Spain, last week for treatment in Vienna after suffering a lung virus, according to Austrian daily Ostrach.

The former driver, who is the non-executive president of Mercedes, was active in the air transport industry. Last January, he bought his old firm Niki and sold 75 percent of the capital to the low-cost company Rhine Air after he renamed it Odamoshon and one of its managers remained.

Lauda, who was crowned world champion for the first time in 1975, suffered a serious incident in August 1976 at Nuremberg during the German Grand Prix, but this did not prevent him from returning to racing and winning the world title in 1977 and 1984.

The poisonous gases he inhaled during an accident he had kept for a minute before pulling him out of his burning car caused his lungs to become fragile.

Niki Lauda, who is usually on the Formula One circuit, missed the last Hockenheim race in Germany on July 22 and then Hungary’s Grand Prix last week because of his injury.

As a result of his serious accident, he underwent kidney transplantation in 1997 and 2005. He is the father of four children from two marriages.
